Work Placements

Work placement  is to give you insight into the world of work and your areas of  interest.  It should help you put into practice the skills youve learnt at school and prepare you for working life.

Your work placement will not always be where you would eventually like to work. It is all about experiencing life at work; from getting up in the morning and catching the bus, meeting and interacting with new people in a totally new environment and learning new skills.

How work placement works

Detailed arrangements for your work placement are made by your school, which is responsible for ensuring the suitability of the placement.  While you are completing your placement, your school will keep in contact with you to make sure that the placement is going well. Any absence during your placement must be reported to school.

Do I get paid?

No - there is no pay.

Hours of Work

These will be the normal hours worked by young employees of the organisation and no more than 8 hours in a day.  Starting and finishing times may vary depending on the type or work involved.  Placements should not start before 6.00 am or finish after 10.00 pm depending on the availability of transport. All of the above details are available on the job description provided.

Health & Safety

Any legislation affecting the health and safety of the employees of an organisation also applies to persons on work placement at that organisation.  Employers are encouraged to give instruction on safety requirements on induction at the work placement.  The School gives students information on their own responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act.  Special attention is given to students with disabilities who take part in placement schemes.  Please take extra care whilst on work placement and please inform your supervisor if you do not fully understand any instruction or procedure.

Insurance

Employers Liability Insurance covers you while on work placement.

Pre Placement Interview

You may have an interview before the placement starts. This is the ideal opportunity to ask any questions you may have before starting the placement, so getting ready for the interview will be part of your preparation work.

You will be able to ask questions, such as what to wear and lunch arrangements.

This is also an ideal opportunity to experience travelling to the placement and ensuring enough time is allowed when the placement commences.
