What is a Curriculum Vitae or CV?

A CV is an extremely important document.  It is an opportunity to “sell yourself” to an employer. The employer needs this document to assess your skills, knowledge, achievements and personal qualities when deciding whether they want to interview you.  A well designed and presented CV will make the right impression and leave the reader wanting to hear more from you in an interview.

You may have a part time job and should also have completed Work Experience in year 10 or 11. You need to sell the skills you have developed or knowledge you have gained from these. You will have predicted or actual GCSEs and other related vocational qualification that need to be prominent, particularly if they are positive.

Consider activities and interests outside of school hours but be truthful. Only list activities which show a depth of interest or commitment, or viewed as an asset. e.g. activities, which promote, dedication, communication or teamwork skills.  Any unusual pastimes, which highlight particular talents, can set you apart from other candidates.  This section is often regarded as unimportant, BUT should be used as a selling point.

A CV is a useful tool which enables you to complete application forms successfully and without gaps in the future. An up-to-date CV is a useful advantage in the labour market even if you are applying for part time jobs whilst at college. You can use this to apply to companies who are not currently advertising for vacancies speculatively. You can also do this when looking for employers if you are considering apprenticeship.
