Noma
Having set her heart on a hospital and medical career, Noma Nyathi was distraught when all her university choices turned down her application as she didnt have the right GCSEs. But her Careers for the Future Personal Adviser uncovered an alternative course, which will allow Noma to progress to the Diagnostic Radiography degree she wants to study.
Barnsley College student Noma has five GCSEs at grade C and above including English, Science and Maths. Her Maths GCSE was achieved at a re-sit taken once she had started at Barnsley College, and so did not allow her to study the science subjects she knew she needed for a medical career.
Noma learned about the extended degree programme for students without a science background but with commitment and motivation thanks to her Careers for the Future Adviser, who also arranged a visit to the Radiography Department at Barnsley Hospital. The course at Sheffield Hallam University incorporates work experience and can lead on to the Diagnostic Radiography degree. Noma has been offered a place subject to her results this summer.
She says: Its all thanks to my Personal Adviser. I would not be going to university without her. I was feeling very bad because everyone else was being offered places.
