My Ambassador Experience.
I've always been interested in becoming a teacher from such an early age. I've always had fantastic teachers that encouraged me and I think that is one of the main reasons I am where I am today! I'm currently studying at Aberystwyth University in Wales where I'm studying Theatre and then hoping to continue this into the field of teaching. I went to Edward Sheerien School in Barnsley where I gained 11.5 GCSEs and then went further to Barnsley College where I gained my A Levels. Although I didn't do as well as I hoped in my A Levels (CCDD), I still progressed to University and I think it is important to realise that no matter what grades you get, as long as you get something and show a true dedication to a subject then thats the most important thing.
I know people of all different abilities who have progressed to university and are loving every minute of it! I'm not saying university is for everyone, because it isn't. However, I think it is one of those opportunities of which you must take advantage and I try to tell people that as much as possible when talking to them about Further and Higher Education.
I've had chance to work with a lot of younger people and have younger friends and it's been my aim to show them and explain to them things about university life they didn't know. I think its important for people to realise that they are not on their own and that millions of people progress onto Higher Education every year.
I have a friend who until recently, never wanted to go to university as she 'couldn't afford it'. However after learning of loan and grant schemes, she found it was going to be easier than she thought and is now seriously thinking about moving away to go to university.
I loved working with this ambassador scheme and have met lots of young people who regulary stop me in the street to say hello to 'Miss Davies' and ask how university is going! I've spoken to people from the age of 11-16 about both college and university and had a very good reaction. I try to make all sessions fun by playing games based on university life and having quiz's. I enjoy this myself and look forward to coming back to my home town where I can continue my work! It's also been brilliant experience as an aspiring teacher and I am looking forward to it more than ever!
